The Decomposition Gallery
Looking at the anthropocentric ritual of human funerals we took a deep dive into nature’s way of handling the same process to move in a more ecocentric direction. Decomposition, which is natures answer to the funeral, is not only a process of breaking down dead matter but also a vital source of life.
The Decomposition Gallery is located in the forest of the Donauinsel, consisting of ten different live artworks created in collaboration with, and to varying degrees by, decomposition agents such as bacteria, fungi, larvae, water and humans. The gallery brings the observer to the motive instead of the motive to the gallery, highlighting decomposition as an ongoing process and a body of work while referencing the Donau as a source of life though its role as a facilitator for decomposition.
